Simeón Rabasa Singla, fundador de Derbi, contribuyó al exitoso lanzamiento de la Guzzi 65 fabricando los 1.000 primeros chasis. Al no renovar el acuerdo con Guzzi, se percató de que con muy poco esfuerzo podía entrar en el prometedor negocio de las motos.
De hecho, ya fabricaba una horquilla telescópica y diferentes componentes de estampación para otras marcas, luego lo único que le faltaba era el motor. Y dicho y hecho, de inmediato se hizo con una partida de los fiables motores IRESA (Industrias Reunidas Españolas S.A.) fabricados en Madrid y nació el velomotor SRS (por las iniciales de Don Simeón).
Con una imagen que revela su planteamiento “anti-Guzzi”, los primeros prototipos se fabricaron en 1949 y la presentación oficial se produjo en la Feria de Muestras de Barcelona de 1950 donde la SRS recibió una favorable acogida. Fabricada hasta 1953, tuvo unas buenas ventas pero no comparables a las de la inalcanzable Guzzi. Hoy la SRS bien puede considerarse como “la abuela de todas las Derbi”.
Simeón Rabasa Singla, founder of Derbi, played a key role in the successful launch of the Guzzi 65 by manufacturing the first 1,000 frames. When the agreement with Guzzi was not renewed, he realised that with minimal effort, he could enter the promising motorcycle business.
In fact, he was already producing a telescopic fork and various stamped components for other brands, so the only missing element was the engine. Without hesitation, he quickly secured a batch of reliable IRESA (Industrias Reunidas Españolas S.A.) engines, manufactured in Madrid, and thus the SRS velomotor was born—named after Don Simeón’s initials.
With a design that clearly reflected its “anti-Guzzi” approach, the first prototypes were built in 1949, and the official presentation took place at the 1950 Barcelona Trade Fair, where the SRS received a warm reception. Produced until 1953, it achieved solid sales, though not on the same scale as the unrivalled Guzzi.
Today, the SRS can rightfully be considered “the grandmother of all Derbi motorcycles.”
