El campeonato de España de Motocross se inicia en 1959 pero a lo largo de los 50 es ya muy popular en muchos pueblos de España. Bultaco tiene un potente equipo en la disciplina y las otras marcas van entrando. Será en esos inicios del motocross en nuestro país cuando, tras adquirir experiencia con las Derbi oficiales, Pedro Pi ficha por Montesa, marca con la que conseguirá la mayor parte de sus éxitos tanto en lo deportivo como en el desarrollo de nuevos modelos. Para empezar la andadura de la marca de la «M Gótica» en la que será una brillante trayectoria en el motocross, parten de una Brio 110S, una moto fabricada en cortas series y pensada para ser base de motos de competición, potente, ligera y rápida. Se monta en la deportiva Brío una culata diferente, un nuevo manillar más ancho, se emplea una horquilla delantera reforzada y se hacen algunos otros cambios menores, como una enorme crono trasera, para una moto de la que se fabricará una corta serie en 1961 para pilotos «amigos» de la casa. Con ella Pí conseguirá el primer gran hito en esa exitosa historia del motocross en Montesa: el campeonato nacional de 1961, en la categoría de 125cc.

The Spanish Motocross Championship began in 1959, but throughout the 1950s, it was already very popular in many towns across Spain. Bultaco had a strong team in the discipline, and other brands gradually joined the competition. During these early days of motocross in Spain, Pere Pi, after gaining experience with official Derbi bikes, signed with Montesa—a brand with which he would achieve most of his success, both in competition and in developing new models.
To begin the journey of the ‘Gothic M’ brand in what would become a brilliant trajectory in motocross, they started with a Brío 110S. This motorcycle was produced in small series and designed as a base for competition bikes—powerful, lightweight, and fast. Several modifications were made to the sporty Brío: a different cylinder head was installed, a new wider handlebar was fitted, a reinforced front fork was used, and some minor changes were made, such as a large rear stopwatch. A limited series of this bike was produced in 1961 for «friendly» riders of the brand. With it, Pí achieved the first major milestone in Montesa’s successful motocross history: the 1961 national championship in the 125cc category.
